Monkey Man - A BloodY WIld RIde!

    "Monkey Man," written, directed, and starring Dev Patel, initially draws viewers in with the promise of "John Wick" action. However, it ultimately captivates with a compelling story centered around themes of loss, retribution, wealthy vs impoverished, and the profound significance of personal and cultural history in shaping our identity.

 Dev Patel's directorial debut showcases a talent and future potential in creating a compelling and immersive experience. The film, with its passionately crafted narrative, transports viewers into a world of chaos that parallels the inner turmoil of the central character. Patel does well creating the atmosphere of chaos that pervades the film and constructs it through a combination of elements, including cinematography, editing, and sound design. The handheld camera work, frenetic editing, and dissonant sound effects create a sense of unease and disorientation, mirroring the character's own state of mind. Patel's performance as “Bobby” was nothing short of powerful and evocative. Bobby’s feelings of extreme loss, pain, rage, and single-mindedness were palpable and as vivid as the colors of the Diwali celebration at the film’s climax. Patel's thoughtful and empathetic approach to the themes of the plight and retribution for the downtrodden, allows viewers to connect with the characters and their struggles, creating a powerful and emotionally resonant experience. With plenty of blood-pumping, well choreographed action to satisfy any action enthusiast. 

I will say that the second act did get shaky. The exposition of “Bobby’s” origins seems oddly paced. Too little and too slow at some times, only to be hurled out in one gut punch, at a time in the movie that feels somewhat out of place. By the time the third act kicks in, it’s a non-stop face punching action train till the final scene. 

 Overall, Dev Patel's directorial debut demonstrates his remarkable skill as a filmmaker and his ability to create a unique and unforgettable experience. I truly enjoyed this film and look forward to more projects helmed by Patel. He has proved he has a gift in this industry far more than merely acting.
